Volkan İncüez was born in 1983 in Giresun. He graduated from Ege University State Conservatory on Turkish Music. While performing traditional and modal music with instruments such as ney, vocal, çağlama, fretless and electric guitar, he aims to create modern textures that reach a different musical depth in each of his projects. While his debut album Kün (2019) depicts a space-time travel with the journey of the breath in the ney, it also appears as the first polyphonic concept ney album. His second solo album, Mahal (2019), on the other hand, emulates a classical Turkish Music performance that turns its face to the roots. The repertoire, performed with ney and classical fretless guitar, ranges from Sultan Selim III (b. 1761) to Gevheri Sultan Fatma Osmanoğlu (b. 1904). In addition, the album “Live Session I”, which he released with his Quartet in February 2020, takes its ideas from traditional music and interprets this music with modern harmony and arrangements, electronic sounds and bass guitar, guitar, sytnh and drum instruments. Believing that a music has a harmonic character even if it is not in a harmonic structure, İncüvez aims to reveal that harmonic character by favoring an understanding of harmony, sound and arrangement that aims not to go beyond the themes or traditional folk melodies’ own auditory effects and feelings. His performance of historical folk melodies and his own compositions offers listeners a unique experience in the intersection of electronic tones and modern music elements with maqam roots. Accordingly, the Quartet sometimes draws back to the roots in performance; sometimes, they become alienated from their identities. Volkan continues to perform and produce with bands such as Hepyek, Derun, Debdebe, Ebren Trio, Kırkbinsinek, Gözyaşı Çetesi and for his solo projects. He finally appears with his album “New World”, which he recorded during the quarantine period and dedicated to all healthcare professionals. He also took part in projects such as Istanbul Biennial 2017 ”Sesime Ses Ver – Add Your Voice to Mine”, Istanbul Jazz Festival, Male Festivalen in Oslo (Norway), Linz Fest (Austria), Festival Mawazine rythmes Du Monde in Rabat (Morocco), Radix Music – Culture festival (Berlin), Ireland in Festa In Bologna (Italy), 8.Festival Strasbourg – Mediterranee (France), World in sound festival Manheim (Germany).
